NAB Introduces AI-Based Investigation System to Combat Financial Crimes

Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has taken a significant step towards modernizing its investigation process by introducing an artificial intelligence (AI)- based investigation system. Developed in collaboration with the National Centre of Artificial Intelligence (NCAI), the platform aims to strengthen the bureau’s ability to investigate financial crimes, corruption cases, and other white-collar offences.

According to NCAI Chairman Dr Yasar Ayaz, the new system marks an important milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward digital transformation. He described it as the country’s first sovereign generative AI-powered investigation platform, designed specifically to meet national requirements while ensuring data security and institutional ownership.

The AI-based system will assist investigators in handling complex cases more effectively. White-collar crimes often involve large amounts of financial data, documents, and evidence that can be difficult and time-consuming to analyze. Dr Ayaz emphasized that the project demonstrates Pakistan’s growing capability to develop advanced technology solutions within the country. The system has been designed to maintain data sovereignty, meaning sensitive information remains under national control rather than relying on foreign platforms. This approach helps protect confidential data while promoting local technological development.

The platform offers support across several key investigative functions. These include complaint verification, inquiry management, investigation assistance, financial analysis, evidence management, and decision-making support. By automating certain tasks and providing valuable insights from large datasets, the AI system can help investigators focus on critical aspects of their cases.

A review meeting regarding the project was held under the supervision of NAB Islamabad/Rawalpindi Director General Waqar Ahmed Chauhan. Dr Ayaz, members of the AI development team, and other experts from the NCAI also attended the meeting. During the session, the team presented a detailed demonstration of the platform and shared updates on its development progress.

Participants examined the system’s features and discussed its potential role in improving investigative procedures. The attendees expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the timely completion and deployment of the platform.
