NCCIA Arrests Man for Allegedly Posing as Government Official to Defraud People

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) Punjab has arrested a man accused of impersonating a government official and using fake documents to defraud people.

The suspect, identified as Faiz Ali Syed, was arrested by the NCCIA Lahore team in connection with FIR No. 171/2026. The action was carried out on the directions of Director NCCIA Punjab Muhammad Ali Waseem.

According to the NCCIA spokesperson, the suspect allegedly contacted officials from government and private institutions through several WhatsApp numbers. He reportedly pretended to represent senior officials and important state institutions.

The suspect allegedly offered to get official work completed or arrange appointments and other facilities in government departments in exchange for money. Investigators believe he used these claims to gain the trust of people and collect payments.

During the operation, the NCCIA also found a private vehicle fitted with a fake green registration plate. The setup was allegedly used to give the impression that the suspect had an official position.

Investigators further alleged that another person was kept in a police uniform to strengthen the false impression of authority.

The agency recovered three mobile phones from the suspect. An initial examination reportedly found WhatsApp conversations, official-looking documents and other digital material that may be connected to the alleged fraud.

One of the WhatsApp accounts was reportedly labelled “Apex Court.” Investigators also found chats in which the suspect allegedly claimed to have links with an important state institution.

Several documents that appeared to be appointment letters and official correspondence were also recovered. Some of these documents reportedly carried the suspect’s name and contained claims about appointments to senior government positions.

The NCCIA said digital evidence also indicated that the suspect had allegedly received money from different individuals by promising to facilitate their work in government departments.

The agency is now investigating the case on multiple fronts, including alleged electronic fraud, forgery, impersonation and other cyber-enabled offenses.

The seized mobile phones and other material have been sent for forensic analysis. The NCCIA said the investigation is continuing and further details may emerge after the forensic examination and questioning of the suspect.

The case highlights how fraudsters can combine digital platforms such as WhatsApp with fake documents and false claims of official connections to deceive victims. Authorities are continuing to examine the digital evidence to determine the full extent of the alleged activities.
