New YouTube AI Controls Give Creators Power Over Content Training

YouTube brings new AI tools to give creators power over how their content is used by AI companies. According to the latest reports, all eligible YouTube creators and rights holders can now decide whether third-party AI models are allowed to train on their videos. These new YouTube AI controls will manage mounting concerns over unauthorized AI training, empowering creators to take control of their work.

YouTube AI Controls Let Creators Authorize AI Training

The new feature is available in YouTube Studio. It lets creators opt-in to authorize particular AI companies. Creators can handpick who gets access from a list of 18 companies, including OpenAI, Adobe, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Anthropic. Thereโ€™s even an โ€œAll third-party companiesโ€ setting for people wanting to grant broader permissions. By default, no third party is allowed to train on videos.

Eligible creators with YouTube Studio Content Manager access can easily handle these preferences under their channel settings. YouTube took this step due to increasing frustrations from creators whose videos have been used for AI training without consent or compensation. YouTube clarified that Google itself will continue to train its own AI models on specific content as part of existing agreements. However, unauthorized scraping of creator content will remain prohibited under YouTubeโ€™s Terms of Service.

YouTube is anticipated to roll out additional features in the future. For instance, it will allow authorized AI companies to access direct video downloads for training purposes. The platformโ€™s move aims to set a precedent for respecting creator rights while balancing innovation in AI. Creators will reportedly see the new feature roll out in YouTube Studio over the coming days, accompanied by banner notifications. This announcement overlapped with Google DeepMindโ€™s launch of Veo 2, its new video-generating AI model, poised to rival OpenAIโ€™s Soraโ€”further underscoring the growing influence of AI in video technology.
