But the detail that matters is not the phone. It is what sits beside it: a set of sketching pencils, with the 4b pencil clearly highlighted among them.
The teaser’s title, “(b)usted”, removes whatever ambiguity remained. Nothing is not hiding the name. It is announcing it in the most Nothing way possible: with a visual pun, a pencil grade, and the implication that anyone paying attention already knows exactly what is coming.
The device being teased is, in all likelihood, the Nothing Phone 4b.
Why This Phone Exists: The CMF Connection
To understand what the Phone 4b is, it helps to understand what it probably was before it became a Nothing device.
Nothing recently confirmed it is canceling plans for a successor to the CMF Phone 2 Pro. CMF by Nothing is the brand’s sub-label targeting the budget segment; think lower price points and less premium materials but the same design DNA. The cancellation was not a choice made lightly. Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis explained that soaring memory and RAM prices had pushed the cost of launching a CMF Phone 2 Pro to somewhere in the $317 to $370 range, which is significantly above what CMF’s target market is willing to pay.
At the same time, Nothing was careful to stress that new smartphones were still in the pipeline. Two upcoming products have already been teased under Pokémon-inspired codenames, Jumpluff and Blastoise, and leaker Yogesh Brar has claimed that existing CMF phone projects have been shifted to the main Nothing brand rather than cancelled outright.
If that information is accurate, the Nothing Phone 4b appears to be exactly that: a former CMF project that has been rehoused under the Nothing name, likely with repositioned pricing and positioning to reflect the brand upgrade.
What the Sketch Reveals About the Design
The teaser does not offer much in terms of hardware detail, deliberately so. But the design elements visible in the sketch are consistent with Nothing’s established visual language.
The transparent rear panel is present, showing exposed internal detailing in the style that has defined every Nothing Phone since the original. The single rear camera configuration suggests this is being positioned below the Phone 4a and 4a Pro in the lineup, devices that prioritise accessibility over camera versatility.
The overall silhouette appears slimmer and more restrained than the 4a, which would align with a budget-orientated product where manufacturing costs are being managed carefully. Nothing’s design team has historically done more with less in this regard; the original CMF Phone 1 managed to look distinctly Nothing-adjacent despite its aggressive price point.
Where It Sits in the Lineup
Nothing currently has the Phone 4a and Phone 4a Pro occupying the mid-range segment. The Phone 4b, if it launches as a more affordable option, would sit below both, creating a three-tier structure within the 4-series that gives the brand coverage across a wider price range than it has previously offered under a single product family.
This is a logical move. Nothing’s challenge has always been scale; the brand has genuine design credibility and a loyal following, but reaching beyond its existing audience requires devices that more buyers can actually afford. A Phone 4b priced below the 4a extends the brand’s reach without diluting the flagship experience at the top of the range.
What We Do Not Know Yet
Nothing has not confirmed the Phone 4b officially. No specifications, no pricing, and no launch date have been disclosed. The teaser establishes that something is coming; it does not yet say when, where, or at what cost.
The Pokémon codenames Jumpluff and Blastoise add further complexity. It is not yet clear whether the Phone 4b is one of these two teased products or a third device separate from both.
