OpenAI Launches ChatGPT App Store for Tools and Services

The ChatGPT app store has officially arrived. This launch marks an important moment for OpenAI. The company is moving closer to its vision of turning ChatGPT into an “everything app.” Instead of being just a chatbot, ChatGPT is now becoming a place where users can interact with services, tools, and platforms in one space.

On Wednesday evening, OpenAI introduced its new App Directory. This feature allows users to browse and access different tools directly inside ChatGPT. At the same time, OpenAI opened its software development kit, or SDK, to developers. This means developers can now build interactive experiences that work within the chatbot interface. It is a clear signal that OpenAI wants to build a strong platform, not just a single product.

OpenAI Launches ChatGPT App Store for Tools and Services

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had hinted at this direction earlier. He said the company planned to add the features people would expect from a strong platform. Launching an app store is a major step toward that goal. It places ChatGPT in the same category as other major digital ecosystems that bring multiple services together.

Along with the app store, OpenAI also made changes to its naming system. Tools that were previously called “connectors” are now referred to as apps. These apps allow users to pull data from other services, such as Google Drive or Dropbox. The new names are meant to make things clearer and simpler for users.

Under the new system, chat connectors are now called apps with file search. Deep research connectors are now apps with deep research. Synced connectors are now apps with sync. OpenAI also explained that some apps may use information from Memory if the feature is turned on. For free and paid users, some data may be used to train models, but only if the user allows it.

The most interesting part of this update is the rise of interactive apps. These apps go beyond basic data access. They allow users to take real actions inside ChatGPT. Spotify was one of the first examples. Users can explore music and get recommendations through chat. Spotify in ChatGPT is now available in more regions, including the UK and parts of Europe.

New apps have also joined the platform. Apple Music lets users search for songs, create playlists, and manage their music libraries. DoorDash connects food ideas to real orders. Users can turn recipes and meal plans into a shopping cart without leaving the chat.

Despite the excitement, one key question remains. OpenAI has not clearly explained how it plans to make money from this system. The company says it is exploring monetization options, including digital goods. More details are expected in the future.

For now, the focus is on expansion and experimentation. Developers are encouraged to build. Users are encouraged to explore. The ChatGPT app store represents a major shift and hints at a future where one app connects almost everything.
