Pakistan Approves National Information Security Framework 2026 to Strengthen Cyber Defenses

The federal cabinet has approved the Pakistan Information Security Framework 2026, introducing a unified national approach to information security as the country faces a growing threat from cyberattacks and digital security breaches.

The framework is aimed at establishing common information security standards across Pakistan, providing government departments, public-sector organizations, and private institutions with a consistent set of requirements for protecting sensitive information and digital systems.

Under the new framework, national authorities will define mandatory information security requirements and auditing controls designed to improve compliance, accountability, and cyber resilience across institutions.

Officials from the National CERT said the framework would help organizations strengthen their existing cybersecurity arrangements, improve protective measures, and adopt uniform security practices.

The initiative is also expected to address differences in security standards currently followed by public and private organizations by introducing a nationally agreed benchmark for information security.

According to officials, the framework will cover key areas including security governance, protection of information systems, risk management, compliance requirements, and auditing mechanisms.

The government expects the framework to support institutions in identifying security vulnerabilities, improving internal controls, and responding more effectively to cyber threats.

National CERT officials described the approval as an important development at a time when Pakistan is witnessing an increase in cyberattacks and other forms of digital security threats.

The framework is expected to provide the foundation for a more coordinated national cybersecurity environment, particularly as government services, financial systems, businesses and critical infrastructure become increasingly dependent on digital platforms.

The approval of the Pakistan Information Security Framework 2026 marks another step towards establishing nationwide cybersecurity standards and strengthening the protection of Pakistan’s digital infrastructure.
