Pakistan Moves Toward Fully Digital E-Passports System

The Government of Pakistan has decided to gradually phase out machine-readable passports and move towards a fully e-passport system. The announcement was made by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi during a meeting held at the Passport and Immigration Headquarters in Islamabad on Friday. The decision marks a major step in modernising Pakistan’s travel documentation system and improving border security.

According to the Interior Minister, the transition to e-passports will bring several benefits, including stronger security features, international compatibility, and a smoother travel experience for citizens. He stated that the new system will help reduce fraud and forgery, which have been long-standing issues in passport issuance. The shift is also expected to align Pakistan’s travel documents with global standards used by many developed countries.

An e-passport is a modern travel document that contains an electronic chip embedded within the passport booklet. This chip securely stores important personal and biometric data such as the holder’s facial features, identity details, and a unique identification number. It also includes a digital signature that helps verify authenticity. Because the chip uses contactless technology, immigration officers can quickly scan the data, reducing the time spent at checkpoints.

Officials explained that Pakistan’s e-passports comply with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which ensures that they can be used at international airports worldwide. One of the major advantages of this system is the ability for Pakistani travelers to use e-gates at many airports, allowing for faster immigration clearance and shorter queues.

During the meeting, the Director General of Passports and Immigration, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, briefed the minister on ongoing reforms in the department. The government has also approved, in principle, the full shift to e-passports, although a final deadline for phasing out older passports has not yet been announced.

Another important decision made in the meeting was the introduction of a cashless payment system in all passport offices starting July 1. This move will eliminate manual cash handling and will make the process more transparent and efficient.

In addition, officials shared progress on plans to introduce home delivery of passports for citizens both within Pakistan and abroad. This service aims to reduce the need for repeated visits to passport offices and make the process more convenient for applicants. The Interior Minister said that this facility would begin soon after completing the final arrangements.

The government is also working to integrate the Pak ID platform into the passport application system. This online system will allow citizens to apply for passports digitally, helping to reduce paperwork and speed up processing times.

Finally, the Interior Minister instructed authorities to finalize a clear policy for business passports in consultation with the Federal Board of Revenue. This will further streamline travel documentation for business professionals.

Overall, the shift to e-passports represents a significant technological upgrade for Pakistan’s immigration system. It aims to improve security, increase efficiency, and provide citizens with a faster and more modern travel experience.
