As many as 37 companies are currently manufacturing mobile phones in Pakistan, the Engineering Development Board (EDB) told the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT and Telecom.

The information came during a committee meeting where the EDB CEO briefed members about the country’s growing mobile phone manufacturing sector.

The EDB said efforts are continuing to bring Apple to Pakistan and encourage the company to start manufacturing phones locally. The board also said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to meet Apple’s CEO during his visit to the United States to discuss the matter.

Committee Chairman Syed Amin-ul-Haque welcomed the growth of mobile phone manufacturing in Pakistan. He said it was encouraging to see phones being produced locally and noted that locally manufactured phones are available at lower prices.

The chairman said Pakistan should work toward a “Smartphone for All” vision so that more people can afford modern smartphones.

He also stressed the need to increase the volume of mobile phone manufacturing in Pakistan. According to him, the country should now focus on producing 4G and 5G smartphones instead of continuing to rely on older 3G devices.

The chairman also said locally manufactured phones should offer both affordable prices and good quality. He emphasized that lower prices should not come at the cost of quality.

IT Secretary Zarar Hasham said around 200 million users in Pakistan are currently using mobile phones. The large number of users highlights the potential for further growth in the local mobile phone market.

The chairman also pointed to the issue of mobile phone theft in Pakistan. He said people in Karachi sometimes lose their phones within a short period and have to purchase new devices.

The growing number of local manufacturers could help Pakistan increase domestic production and provide consumers with more affordable smartphone options.

The government is also looking to attract additional international brands and expand local manufacturing. Bringing Apple into the country’s manufacturing ecosystem could further strengthen Pakistan’s mobile phone industry.

The committee’s discussion highlighted the need to increase local production, improve smartphone affordability, and shift the market toward newer 4G and 5G devices.
