Pakistan Partners with Chinese Firm to Expand EV Charging Stations

Pakistan has taken another step towards promoting electric vehicles (EVs) by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Chinese company to develop EV charging stations across the country.

The agreement was signed between StarCharge Energy Pakistan and China’s Bahum Global Ltd. The partnership aims to strengthen Pakistan’s EV ecosystem through technology transfer, international collaboration, and support for local manufacturing.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan said the government is committed to transforming Pakistan’s transportation sector by promoting electric mobility. He added that the upcoming Battery Energy Storage System Policy will play a key role in accelerating the country’s shift towards electric vehicles.

According to Khan, the government is also encouraging the local production of lithium-ion batteries. He said the new policy will attract foreign investment and help build a sustainable industrial ecosystem for the EV sector.

Under the agreement, Bahum Global Ltd will provide technological support and work with StarCharge Energy Pakistan to establish EV charging stations across the country. The charging network will make electric vehicles more practical and convenient for consumers by improving access to charging facilities.

The MoU marks one of the first major international collaborations aimed at expanding Pakistan’s electric vehicle infrastructure. Officials believe the project will support the growing demand for EVs while encouraging the adoption of cleaner transportation technologies.

The government expects the expansion of EV charging stations to remove one of the biggest challenges facing electric vehicle users. A wider charging network could increase consumer confidence and encourage more people to switch from conventional fuel-powered vehicles to electric alternatives.

Haroon Akhtar Khan said the government’s electric mobility strategy will also help reduce Pakistan’s dependence on imported petroleum products. Lower fuel imports could ease pressure on the country’s import bill while improving energy security.

He added that the transition to electric vehicles will also contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions from the transport sector.

The agreement reflects Pakistan’s broader efforts to develop a modern electric mobility ecosystem through international partnerships, local manufacturing, and supportive government policies. Officials hope these initiatives will create new investment opportunities, strengthen the local EV industry, and accelerate the country’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable transportation.
