Pakistan Pushes 5G and Fibre Expansion to Accelerate Digital Economy, Says IT Minister
Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has said Pakistan is accelerating efforts to expand high-speed internet, strengthen digital connectivity, and increase the contribution of the technology sector to the national economy.
Addressing the GSMA Digital Nation Pakistan event, the minister said the IT sector was playing an increasingly important role in economic growth, while the country’s technology exports continued to rise at a rapid pace.
She said the government was working to introduce 5G services to provide faster and more reliable internet access across Pakistan. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to improve connectivity, expand digital infrastructure, and support the government’s vision for a digitally enabled economy.
According to the minister, the number of internet users in Pakistan has continued to increase, with data consumption also recording significant growth over the past five years. She said around two million users were relying on fibre-based internet services in 2024, reflecting growing demand for high-speed and stable broadband connections.
Khawaja said the federal government was focused on improving internet quality and extending connectivity to more areas, including underserved communities. She added that provincial governments were also working closely with the centre to support digital infrastructure projects and improve access to online services.
The minister said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had placed the provision of better internet services and the development of a digital Pakistan among the government’s key priorities.
She added that stronger connectivity would support digital businesses, online education, financial technology, e-commerce, and the broader innovation economy, while helping Pakistan compete more effectively in the global technology market.
