Pakistan to Launch First-Ever Digital Economy Council to Boost Online Business Sector

The government of Pakistan is set to establish the country’s first Pakistan Council of Digital Economy, marking a significant step toward strengthening the nation’s digital business ecosystem. The move aims to provide a structured platform for private digital companies and improve coordination with government authorities.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Pakistan Digital Authority (PDA), a subsidiary of the Ministry of Information Technology, which has been actively working to streamline policies and promote digital enterprises. The PDA has already consulted with 40 leading private digital companies as part of preparatory measures.

According to officials, the council will operate similarly to a chamber of commerce, offering a formal mechanism for dialogue between the government and digital companies. It is expected to advise on online business regulations, taxation, and policy frameworks, ensuring that the private sector plays an active role in shaping Pakistan’s digital economy.

The council’s establishment aligns with broader government efforts to expand the digital sector, enhance investment opportunities, and address challenges faced by online businesses. The council is also expected to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing among digital enterprises, providing a unified voice for the sector.

The Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate the Pakistan Council of Digital Economy, signaling the government’s commitment to integrating private-sector expertise into policymaking to foster a robust digital business environment.

Officials said the council will serve as a bridge between the public and private sectors, helping the government understand emerging market needs while offering companies a platform to voice concerns and propose solutions. Analysts note that this move could accelerate Pakistan’s digital transformation and improve competitiveness in the regional tech landscape.
