Pakistan’s ICT Export Remittances Surge 20.6% to $4.6 Billion, Freelancer Earnings Jump Nearly 50%

Pakistan’s information and communication technology (ICT) export remittances rose 20.6% during fiscal year 2025-26, reaching $4.6 billion, according to figures submitted by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication to the Senate.

The latest numbers mark a significant increase from the $3.8 billion recorded during the corresponding period of fiscal year 2024-25, highlighting continued growth in Pakistan’s technology and digital services sector.

The Ministry of IT provided the figures in a written response submitted to the upper house of Parliament.

According to the ministry’s data, ICT export remittances increased by approximately $786 million during FY2025-26, rising from $3.814 billion in FY2024-25 to around $4.6 billion.

The 20.6% year-on-year increase reflects growing foreign exchange earnings from Pakistan’s software development, IT-enabled services, technology companies, and other digital service providers serving overseas markets.

The performance comes as Pakistan continues to seek greater technology exports as a source of foreign exchange and economic growth.

Pakistan’s technology freelancers recorded even stronger growth during the period.

Export remittances generated by Pakistani IT freelancers increased 49.4%, reaching approximately $1.16 billion during FY2025-26.

This compares with $779.4 million in freelancer remittances recorded during the corresponding period of FY2024-25.

The sharp rise underscores the growing contribution of independent technology professionals to Pakistan’s overall digital export economy, particularly in areas such as software development, web services, graphic design, digital marketing, and other remotely delivered services.

The figures indicate that freelancers are becoming an increasingly important component of Pakistan’s technology export ecosystem.

With more Pakistani professionals providing services to international clients through global freelancing platforms and direct contracts, freelance earnings are contributing a growing share of foreign exchange inflows associated with the ICT sector.

The nearly 50% increase in freelancer remittances, compared with overall ICT export growth of 20.6%, also suggests that independently delivered digital services are expanding at a faster pace than the broader technology export sector.

Tech sector strengthens foreign exchange contribution

Pakistan has increasingly focused on expanding its IT and digital economy as the government seeks to diversify exports beyond traditional sectors.

Higher ICT export receipts can help strengthen foreign exchange inflows while creating opportunities for software companies, startups, technology professionals, and freelancers to access global markets without relying heavily on physical export infrastructure.

The latest figures submitted to the Senate show that the sector maintained strong momentum during FY2025-26, with both established technology exporters and freelancers contributing to the increase.

With ICT export remittances now reaching $4.6 billion and freelancer earnings crossing $1.16 billion, Pakistan’s digital services sector is emerging as an increasingly significant contributor to the country’s export economy.
