PM Shehbaz Orders Pilot Launch of Automated Tax Collection System in Islamabad

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the launch of a pilot project for a proposed automated tax collection system in Islamabad. The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize Pakistan’s tax administration and improve revenue collection through the use of advanced technology.

The decision was made during a meeting held on June 4, where the prime minister reviewed ongoing reforms within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). The meeting was attended by key government officials, including Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and State Minister for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani. Discussions focused on measures to make the country’s tax system more efficient, transparent, and technology-driven.

During the meeting, officials presented a detailed plan aimed at improving inland revenue collection. The proposed system will reduce manual processes and introduce a more automated approach to tax management. One of its key features will be the ability to identify under-reported income and assets by analyzing data from multiple sources, including property records, vehicle ownership information, and banking transactions.

The government plans to use modern technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen the tax collection process. These tools will help authorities detect discrepancies in financial information, making it easier to identify potential tax evasion while improving overall compliance. Officials believe that automation can significantly enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of tax assessments.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of reducing human involvement in tax collection procedures. According to him, minimizing discretionary powers and manual intervention is necessary to create a fair and reliable system. He stated that a modern and automated tax management framework would be a major step forward in the government’s reform agenda.

The prime minister also highlighted the potential benefits of the project. He noted that the new system could increase government revenues while promoting transparency and fairness. By reducing opportunities for corruption and improving accountability, the initiative may also help strengthen public confidence in the tax system.

Another important objective of the reforms is the documentation of the economy and the expansion of the tax base. The government has been working to bring more individuals and businesses into the formal tax network, ensuring that all eligible taxpayers contribute their fair share. Officials believe that improved technology can support these efforts by providing better access to financial data and simplifying tax administration.

The meeting also included a review of enforcement measures against the illegal cigarette trade. Prime Minister Shehbaz praised provincial governments for their efforts to curb the sale of illicit cigarettes. According to officials, these actions will generate an additional Rs40 billion in tax revenue this year, providing a significant boost to the national treasury.

As part of the proposed reforms, the government is considering the creation of several specialized departments, including a National Faceless Audit Wing, a National Assessment Wing, and a Field Operations Wing. These units would help manage different aspects of tax administration while supporting the transition to a more digital and transparent system.

The pilot project in Islamabad will serve as an important test of the government’s vision for a modern tax collection system. If successful, it could pave the way for wider implementation across the country and play a key role in improving Pakistan’s fiscal management.
