PTA Blocks Over One Million Online Links to Curb Illegal Digital Content

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken large-scale action against illegal and inappropriate content on the internet by blocking more than one million web links and URLs. This move is part of a broader effort to control the spread of unlawful material on digital platforms, especially content involving character assassination of judges from the superior judiciary and material considered harmful to public order and morality.

According to a detailed report released by the PTA, social media platforms remain the main source of such content. The authority carried out extensive monitoring and review across popular platforms to identify posts, videos, and links that violated Pakistan’s laws and regulations. The report highlights the scale of digital enforcement. It shows how actively the regulator is working to limit harmful online activity.

PTA Blocks Over One Million Online Links to Curb Illegal Digital Content

Among all platforms, Facebook and TikTok faced the highest level of action. TikTok experienced the strictest enforcement, with around 94 percent of the reviewed content being blocked. This made it the platform with the highest blocking rate. The PTA reviewed more than 174,000 TikTok links related to illegal material and blocked over 163,000 videos, reflecting a strong stance against objectionable content.

Facebook also saw heavy scrutiny. Out of approximately 229,000 links reviewed on the platform, nearly 197,000 were blocked. Instagram recorded a similarly high rate of enforcement. The PTA examined around 43,000 Instagram URLs and blocked about 38,000 of them, resulting in an 87 percent blocking rate.

YouTube and X (formerly Twitter) were also part of the review process. On YouTube, about 72,000 links were checked, and more than 64,000 were blocked. X had a comparatively lower enforcement rate. While over 112,000 links were reviewed on the platform, only around 70,800 were blocked, giving it the lowest blocking rate among major platforms.

In addition to these well-known platforms, the PTA reviewed content on several other digital services. Nearly 898,000 links were examined on these platforms, and about 891,000 were blocked. This near-total enforcement shows that a large portion of the content found on smaller or lesser-known platforms was considered unlawful.

Overall, the PTA reported blocking more than 1.4 million links related to various categories of illegal content. Obscenity and morality-related material formed the largest group, with over 1.06 million links blocked. Content against the state and national defence accounted for around 148,000 blocked links. However, anti-religious material led to the restriction of more than 109,000 links. Sectarian and hate-related content also faced action, with about 76,000 links blocked.

The PTA stated that these measures are aimed at reducing cybercrime, protecting state and judicial institutions, and ensuring a safer digital environment. The authority emphasized that continued monitoring and enforcement are necessary to prevent the spread of harmful and unlawful content across online platforms in Pakistan.
