PTA’s DIRBS Device Registration Portal Goes Offline Today, Here Is What You Need to Know

If you are planning to register a new phone, verify a device’s status, or complete any PTA DIRBS-related transaction, your window is closing fast.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has announced a scheduled upgrade to its Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System, better known as DIRBS, that will take the portal at dirbs.pta.gov.pk and all related services offline starting today, July 3, 2026, at 5:00 PM. Services will remain unavailable until July 6, 2026, at 4:00 AM, a downtime window of approximately 59 hours.

What Is DIRBS and Why It Matters

DIRBS is Pakistan’s national system for tracking, registering, and blocking mobile devices. It is the mechanism through which the PTA monitors whether a device is legitimately imported and registered or whether it falls into the category of smuggled or unregistered handsets.

For consumers, DIRBS is the system they use to check whether a new phone purchase is compliant, register a device brought in from abroad, or verify whether a second-hand phone they are buying has a clean status. For commercial importers and retailers, it is a regulatory requirement embedded in the device supply chain.

The system directly affects whether a device will function on Pakistani networks. Unregistered or blocked devices face connectivity restrictions, making DIRBS checks a routine step for anyone buying, selling, or importing mobile phones.

What the Upgrade Involves

PTA describes the updated system as in-house developed, meaning the upgraded DIRBS has been built by PTA’s own technical teams rather than outsourced to an external vendor. The authority says the new version will simplify the device registration process for both general users and commercial entities.

No technical specifics of what changes have been detailed in PTA’s announcement, but the emphasis on simplification suggests the user-facing registration process, which has historically involved multiple steps and documentation requirements, may become more streamlined after the upgrade.

What Users Should Do

Anyone with a pending DIRBS transaction has until 5:00 PM today to complete it. After that, the portal will be inaccessible until the early hours of Sunday morning, July 6.

For most ordinary users, a 59-hour downtime will be an inconvenience rather than a crisis; device registration is not typically time-critical unless someone is in the process of activating a new purchase. Commercial importers and retailers with time-sensitive registration requirements should plan around the window accordingly.

PTA has asked for the cooperation and understanding of all users and commercial entities during the upgrade period.

Services are expected to resume at 4:00 AM on July 6, after which the upgraded DIRBS system will go live. Whether the improvements are as meaningful in practice as the announcement suggests will become clear once users begin interacting with the new system.
