PTA Efforts Lead to Removal of Blasphemous Groups from Facebook in Pakistan

In a significant move to curb online blasphemy, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has successfully persuaded Facebook to remove groups promoting pornographic and blasphemous content from its platform in Pakistan.

The announcement comes after a concerted campaign by the PTA under the leadership of its chairman, whose efforts were widely acknowledged for achieving this milestone. The removed content reportedly targeted the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH); revered figures of Islam, including the Mothers of the Believers, the Ahl al-Bayt, and companions; as well as the sanctity of the Quran.

Authorities emphasized that the action protects not only Islamic sanctities but also the sacred beliefs of other religions, including Hinduism and Christianity, from such online offenses.

In a statement, PTA expressed appreciation for the role of religious scholars and Pakistani citizens who actively participated in raising awareness and advocating for the protection of religious values online.

While this marks a notable victory against digital blasphemy, officials cautioned that this represents only one front in a broader and ongoing struggle. “The battle against online sacrilege continues, and all avenues promoting such content must be closed,” the PTA said.

This development highlights Pakistan’s increasing regulatory oversight of digital platforms and their responsibility in monitoring content that offends religious sentiments. Experts note that while social media companies are cooperating more closely with authorities, vigilance remains essential to prevent similar content from resurfacing.
