PTA Fines Mobile Operators Rs 3.41 Billion Over Network Quality and Coverage Failures

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has imposed financial penalties totalling Rs 3.41 billion on cellular mobile operators over the past four years for failing to meet quality-of-service and coverage requirements, according to official documents.

The figures point to a sustained enforcement campaign by the telecom regulator against operators accused of repeatedly falling short of their license obligations.

During the period under review, PTA issued 20 warning letters and 86 show-cause notices to mobile operators over deficiencies in network performance, service quality, and coverage.

The regulator said companies found in violation are required to submit a root-cause analysis explaining the deficiencies, along with a time-bound corrective action plan and a compliance report within 30 days.

PTA then conducts follow-up surveys to determine whether the identified problems have been addressed. Operators that fail to improve their performance may face further regulatory action, including additional financial penalties.

The penalties reflect growing pressure on telecom companies to improve call quality, mobile internet performance, and network availability across the country.

Service complaints have remained a persistent issue for consumers, particularly in areas affected by weak signals, dropped calls, slow data speeds, and limited network coverage.

The PTA said its enforcement measures were aimed at ensuring that operators comply with regulatory standards and fulfill the service commitments included in their licenses.

The latest data suggests the regulator is taking a tougher approach towards repeated non-compliance as it seeks to improve the reliability of mobile services and strengthen accountability within Pakistan’s telecommunications sector.
