PTA Moves to Block WhatsApp Accounts Linked to Inactive SIMs

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to block WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive, canceled, or no-longer-used SIMs, citing concerns that such accounts are increasingly being exploited for fraud and other illegal activities.
According to the authority, WhatsApp accounts associated with inactive mobile numbers can remain vulnerable even after the SIM is no longer in regular use. PTA said some of these accounts have been used for fraudulent and unlawful purposes, prompting the regulator to tighten digital security measures.
The authority has advised users to ensure that their WhatsApp accounts are linked to active and currently used mobile numbers.
Users Advised to Update WhatsApp Numbers
PTA has urged users who have changed their mobile numbers to immediately use WhatsApp’s Change Number feature so they can retain control of their accounts and reduce the risk of misuse.
The regulator also advised subscribers to verify the current status of their SIMs and take timely action if a number has become inactive, canceled, or is no longer in use.
According to PTA, action against WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive SIMs could begin at any time.
The move is part of a broader effort to reduce fraud, strengthen digital security, and prevent misuse of mobile numbers that are no longer actively controlled by their original users.
PTA said timely updating of mobile numbers on WhatsApp can help users maintain account control and protect their digital identities from unauthorized use.
