PTA Warns of Immediate Ban on Unregistered/JV Mobile Phones as Nationwide Crackdown Begins

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strong nationwide warning, cautioning millions of mobile users that unregistered or non-compliant devices may face an immediate ban from all local networks as authorities tighten enforcement measures.
In its latest advisory, PTA confirmed that any handset not validated through the Device Identification, Registration, and Blocking System (DIRBS) risks being blocked without prior notice. Officials reiterated that only registered and verified devices are guaranteed uninterrupted voice, SMS, and data services in Pakistan.
According to the regulator, unregistered phones, often sold at cheaper prices due to unpaid taxes and customs duties, continue to circulate widely in local markets. While these devices may appeal to low-income buyers, PTA warned that they carry severe risks, including sudden loss of network access, weak signals, and persistent connectivity failures.
Consumers have been advised to check the status of their phones through the 15-digit IMEI number, accessible by dialing *#06#. The IMEI can then be verified through the PTA website or by sending it via SMS to 8484.
Officials stressed that enforcement efforts are being intensified nationwide, and users who fail to register their devices could experience full service disruption. PTA stated that compliance with DIRBS is essential to combat grey-market inflows, protect consumers from financial loss, and maintain the integrity of Pakistan’s telecom infrastructure.
The authority urged the public to purchase only authorized devices and complete registration immediately to avoid network restrictions as the crackdown continues.
