PTA Warns of Legal Action Over Use of SIMs Registered in Others’ Names

Pakistan’s telecom regulator has cautioned mobile users that SIM cards must only be used by the individuals in whose names they are registered, stressing that any deviation could invite legal or administrative action.
In a new advisory issued on Thursday, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) stated that the practice of using SIMs registered to another person violates telecom regulations and exposes the registered subscriber to full responsibility for any misuse.
The authority clarified that accountability for all calls, messages, and data usage lies with the person whose name appears on the SIM registration, regardless of who actually uses the connection. “Any unlawful or unauthorized activity carried out through a SIM will be attributed to the registered subscriber,” the PTA said.
The regulator urged consumers to regularly verify their SIM ownership details and avoid sharing or using mobile connections registered under someone else’s identity. It also emphasized that compliance with telecom laws is mandatory and enforceable.
According to the PTA, failure to follow these rules may result in regulatory or legal action, depending on the nature of the violation.
The reminder is part of broader efforts by authorities to tighten oversight of mobile connections, amid concerns that improperly registered or misused SIMs can facilitate fraud and other illegal activities.
