Punjab Government Announces 99% Tax Exemption for Electric Vehicles

The Punjab government has introduced a major incentive to encourage the use of electric vehicles (EVs) across the province. Under the new policy, owners of electric vehicles will receive a 99% exemption on motor vehicle tax in Punjab. The decision came into effect on July 1, 2026, and will remain valid until June 30, 2027.

The tax relief was announced by the Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department under the powers granted by the Punjab Motor Vehicles Taxation Act. The exemption applies to all eligible electric vehicles registered in Punjab, except those that already pay tax under the lump sum taxation system.

With this initiative, EV owners will now pay only 1% of the standard annual motor vehicle tax. The significant reduction will lower the overall cost of owning an electric vehicle and encourage more people to switch from conventional petrol and diesel-powered vehicles to cleaner alternatives.

The Punjab government introduced this measure as part of its broader strategy to promote electric mobility and support environmentally friendly transportation. As fuel prices and import costs continue to put pressure on the economy, encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles can help reduce the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products.

The policy also aims to address growing environmental concerns, particularly in major cities such as Lahore, where air pollution remains a serious challenge. Increasing the number of electric vehicles on the roads can help reduce harmful emissions and improve overall air quality. Since EVs produce no tailpipe emissions, they are considered a cleaner and more sustainable option for daily transportation.

Industry experts believe the tax exemption could increase interest in electric cars, motorcycles, and other EVs. Lower ownership costs may encourage consumers who were previously hesitant due to higher upfront prices. The move could also support the growth of Pakistan’s electric vehicle market by creating greater demand and encouraging investment in charging infrastructure and related services.

The latest announcement reflects the government’s commitment to building a greener transport system while supporting long-term environmental and economic goals. By making electric vehicles more affordable to own, Punjab hopes to accelerate the transition toward cleaner transportation and reduce the environmental impact of road traffic.

As the policy remains in effect until the end of June 2027, prospective buyers have an opportunity to benefit from the substantial tax savings. If the initiative delivers positive results, it could pave the way for additional incentives and further expansion of electric mobility across the province.

Overall, the 99% tax exemption represents a significant step toward promoting sustainable transportation in Punjab. It offers financial relief to EV owners, supports cleaner air, and reinforces the government’s efforts to encourage environmentally responsible mobility for the future.
