Punjab Govt. To Relaunch Laptop Scheme After 7 Years
The Prime Minister Laptop Scheme was an initiative undertaken by then Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif. It was a part of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme. Laptops to deserving students studying in public and semi-public universities were distributed throughout Pakistan. This scheme was launched back in 2013-14 to distribute 200,000 laptops to the bright students of Pakistan and Azad Jamu Kashmir (AJ&K). However, the PTI government stopped the distribution during their tenure. In a significant development, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif gave the go-ahead to restore the laptop scheme for students across the Punjab. The decision was made during a meeting held in Lahore. It is pertinent to mention here that the laptop scheme is being restored in the province after gap of seven years.
Punjab Laptop Scheme Revived!
Speaking on this occasion, the chief minister, Maryam Nawaz underscored the urgent need to improve educational infrastructure, especially in underprivileged areas. The major topics of discussion during the meeting were the promotion of higher education, the laptop scheme, and transport facilities for students. It was also decided to establish new universities and colleges in backward districts on a priority basis.
CM Punjab, Maryam Nawaz was informed that over 650,000 students are enrolled in private and public sector universities in Punjab comprising 44% boys and 56% girls. Punjab CM welcomed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s declaration of an “educational emergency” and underlined the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in both school and higher education sectors.
