Qualcomm’s New 5GHz Snapdragon Chip Could Challenge Apple’s A20 Pro in iPhone 18

Qualcomm has introduced its latest flagship mobile processors, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, bringing a 2 nm design, 5 GHz CPU speeds, and a heavier focus on on-device artificial intelligence.

The new chips are expected to power the next generation of premium Android smartphones, including upcoming models from brands such as Motorola, OnePlus, etc. Qualcomm says both platforms use its custom Oryon CPU architecture, with two Prime cores reaching up to 5.0GHz and six Performance cores running at up to 4.0GHz. Recent launch coverage describes them as the first mobile CPUs to cross the 5GHz threshold.

Qualcomm Takes Aim at Apple’s A20 Pro

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 sits at the top of Qualcomm’s new lineup, offering additional AI capability, more shared cache, and enhanced gaming features.

The launch puts Qualcomm’s latest silicon in direct competition with Apple’s A20 Pro, which powers the newly released iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple’s A20 Pro is also built around a 2nm-generation platform and has delivered strong CPU and graphics performance in early testing.

Qualcomm is placing particular emphasis on on-device AI. The new Snapdragon platforms feature an upgraded Hexagon NPU designed to handle larger AI workloads directly on smartphones, including contextual and agent-based tasks.

The Extreme version also adds additional processing hardware aimed at improving gaming, graphics, and sustained performance.

Camera capabilities have received an upgrade as well. The Extreme model supports video capture at up to 8K at 60fps, while the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 supports up to 8K at 30fps, according to recent launch reports.

Early benchmark leaks from devices using the Extreme chip suggest strong performance, although real-world comparisons with Apple’s A20 Pro will depend heavily on individual phone designs, cooling systems, and software optimization.

For consumers, the biggest improvements are likely to be noticeable in demanding areas such as mobile gaming, AI processing, high-resolution video and sustained workloads rather than routine smartphone use.
