RIP Yahoo Messenger. It is the end of an era for Yahoo Messenger, as it is going to shut down on July 17. Yahoo Messenger launched on March 9, 1998, as Yahoo Pager. Then got its iconic rebranding on June 21, 1999. Thus, on July 17, 2018, when it is going to shut down.

However, there is not any replacement product for Yahoo Messenger. Oath reminded everyone about Yahoo Squirrel, which is an invite-only group messaging app. The app is currently available in beta.
The company writes
“There currently isn’t a replacement product available for Yahoo Messenger. We’re constantly experimenting with new services and apps, one of which is an invite-only group messaging app called Yahoo Squirrel (currently in beta).”
The company has not announced any specific reason for shutting down Messenger. However, it hinted that the other apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, WeChat etc get the dominance these days, Furthermore, Oath also shut down AIM, AOL’s equivalent messaging app, in October.
Moreover, Yahoo says that you can download your chat history on Messenger for the next six months.

- Move to the downloader request site which is Yahoo Downloader
- Sign in and select a verification method > enter the Account Key sent to you.
- Click on Download > enter your email. You will receive the chat history on your entered email ID.
