Samsung Files Galaxy Z Flip Design Patent That Can Fold Both Inward and Outward

Samsung has filed a new design patent for a foldable Galaxy Z Flip that can fold both inward and outward, offering a fresh take on the future of foldable devices. While the concept is still at the patent stage, it highlights the company’s continued efforts to explore innovative smartphone designs.

According to the patent, the device closely resembles the Galaxy Z Flip series but introduces a unique dual-folding mechanism. Unlike current foldable phones that fold in only one direction, this design would allow users to fold the phone either inward to protect the display or outward for a larger, uninterrupted viewing experience.

To support this design, Samsung has proposed a flexible display with curved edges on both sides. The patent suggests that when the phone is folded inward, the curved portions of the display could remain visible and continue showing useful information such as notifications, time, or other quick-access content. This approach is similar to the Edge UX feature previously seen on Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones.

When folded outward, the display would remain fully exposed, creating a more immersive screen with minimal visible bezels. Samsung believes this configuration could provide a better viewing experience while maintaining the compact form factor of a flip phone.

The patent also includes engineering details aimed at preventing the flexible display from being damaged when folded in either direction. Curved sections near the hinge will ensure the display does not collide with itself during the folding process, helping improve durability.

Although the concept introduces new possibilities, questions remain about its practical use. Carrying the device while folded outward could leave the display exposed to scratches and accidental damage, making the inward-folded position a safer option for everyday use.

As with all patent filings, there is no guarantee that Samsung will turn this concept into a commercial product. Companies often patent new ideas to protect future innovations, and many of these concepts never reach the market.

Even so, the latest filing demonstrates Samsung’s ongoing interest in pushing the boundaries of foldable smartphone technology. If developed further, a dual-folding Galaxy Z Flip could offer users greater flexibility while introducing new ways to interact with foldable displays.
