Samsung Tops the List despite Global Smart phone Shipment Decrease in First Quarter of 2018

Global Smart phone market has witnessed a radical decrease in smart phone shipments in China. This resulted in decline of overall worldwide market by 2.9%.

The global smartphone market is being as multifaceted as ever. Considering the first quarter of 2018, there is a decline in shipments of handsets in comparison to the same quarter of 2017. However, Chinese brands Huawei and Xiaomi have gained a respectable position.

Samsung Tops the List despite Global Smart phone Shipment Decrease in First Quarter of 2018

According to a 30th May report of International Data Corporation (IDC),approximately 1.462 billion smartphones will be shipped in 2018, as compared to 1.465 billion handsets that shipped in 2017.

Samsung, being world’s favorite smart phone brand is able to clinch the top position with 78.2 million units shipped, and a reasonable market share of 23.4%. However, it is a decline of 2.4% in comparison to the same quarter of 2017. The main reason behind the success of Samsung is the launch of Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9 plus in this quarter. Moreover, budget friendly devices like Samsung Galaxy J and Galaxy A supported to sustain the shipment volume.

Apple stands at the second place, with 52.2 million units shipped and a market share of 15.6%, which is an increase of 2.8% in comparison with 2017 first quarter. IDC believes that Apple iPhone X had an integral part in their success in first quarter.  Moreover, top grossing sales of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 plus added to their success.

 

Chinese Brands Retain Challenging Positions in IDC list

Brands like Huawei, OPPO, and Xiaomi appeared to be strong challengers for Samsung and Apple. Huawei bagged third position with 39.3 million mobile phones shipments and market share of 11.8%. This is an increase of 13.8% in comparison to first quarter of 2017. The reason behind success of Huawei is their strong hold in Chinese market, and secondly their high end investment for improving the brand image in the global market.

Xiaomi, on the other hand have made a huge jump in terms of increased shipments from 14.8 million units in 2017 first quarter to 28 million units in 2018 first quarter. This gives them a market share of 8.4% and a YOY change of 87.8%.

OPPO mobiles experienced a decline in their year-on-year by 7.5%. They shipped 23.9 million units and gained a market share of 7.1%, bagging the fifth position on the ranking.

Other brands including Sony, One Plus, and LG were collectively able to ship 112.7 million units during the first quarter and a market share of 33.7 percent. The shipments are down by 18.5 percent.

Rise Expected in Global Smart phone Market in 2019

According to the think tank of IDC, 2019 will witness a growth and improvement in global smart phone market by approx. 3 percent annually. Worldwide shipments are expected to reach 1.654 billion in 2022. Country like Pakistan has large number of smart phone users. Mobile Prices in Pakistan plays a vital role in boosting the sale of smart phones in a country.  Reasonable mobile prices can certainly increase the demand and sale of smart phones.
