Samsung’s Rollable Phone Could Mark the Next Big Leap in Smartphone Innovation

Samsung may be preparing to move beyond foldable smartphones, with reports indicating that the company is developing what could become the world’s first commercially available rollable phone. If launched as planned, the device would introduce a new form factor that expands through a sliding mechanism instead of a traditional fold.

According to reports from South Korea, Samsung Display is working to commercialize a rollable Galaxy smartphone during the first half of 2028. The device is expected to transform from a compact smartphone into a much larger display, offering users additional screen space without the crease typically associated with foldable devices.

The handset is rumored to debut alongside the Galaxy S28 series or join Samsung’s foldable lineup under the reported Galaxy Z Slide branding. Although the company has not officially confirmed the device, industry speculation suggests it may feature an expandable 10-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of approximately 440ppi. Reports also indicate that Samsung could introduce a second rollable model by 2030.

Samsung’s reported shift toward rollable technology comes as competition in the foldable smartphone market continues to grow. According to market research firm Omdia, Samsung Display’s share of foldable smartphone panel shipments declined from 41.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 27 percent in the first quarter of 2026. A commercially available rollable phone could help the company strengthen its technological leadership and differentiate itself in the premium smartphone segment.

However, bringing a rollable smartphone to market involves significant engineering challenges. Unlike foldable devices, a rollable display must repeatedly extend and retract while maintaining a flat surface free from wrinkles, waves, or image distortion. The internal rolling mechanism, flexible display layers, and supporting components must also remain durable enough for everyday use without adding excessive thickness or weight.

Samsung has been working on flexible display technologies for several years. At CES 2023, the company unveiled its Flex Hybrid concept, combining foldable and slidable display technologies in a single prototype. Later that year, Samsung Display showcased the Rollable Flex prototype during SID Display Week, where the display expanded from 49mm to more than 254mm, demonstrating the potential of rollable OLED technology.

If commercialized, the rollable Galaxy phone could appeal to users looking for a compact smartphone that transforms into a near-tablet-sized device for multitasking, entertainment, gaming, and productivity. The sliding design may also eliminate the visible crease that remains one of the biggest compromises of current foldable smartphones.

Despite growing speculation, Samsung has not officially announced the device or confirmed its launch timeline. As a result, the reported specifications, branding, and expected 2028 release remain subject to change until the company makes an official announcement.
