Senate IT Committee Recommends Super App for Secure Messaging of Government Officials

The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology has recommended developing a dedicated messaging super app for government officials to improve the security of sensitive communications and data.

The committee discussed the growing threat of sensitive data being stolen and sold by criminal groups during its meeting.

An Additional Director of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) told the committee that a gang had recently been arrested in Rawalpindi for selling sensitive information belonging to senior officials and other important individuals.

Gang Allegedly Sold Officials’ Data Abroad

According to the NCCIA official, the gang was involved in obtaining sensitive data of senior government officials and selling it abroad in exchange for money.

The development raised concerns among committee members about the security of government officials’ personal and official information. The incident also highlighted the need for stronger digital security measures for communications involving sensitive information.

Committee Proposes Dedicated Government Messaging App

To address these concerns, the Senate IT Committee recommended the development of a secure messaging application specifically for government officials.

The proposed super app would provide a dedicated platform for officials to communicate and exchange information without relying on widely used public messaging services.

The committee directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to begin work on developing the proposed application.

The recommendation will likely improve the protection of sensitive government communications and reducing the risk of confidential information being accessed or shared through insecure channels.

The committee’s discussion also underlined the broader challenges faced by government institutions as more official communication and data move to digital platforms.
