Senate IT Committee Reviews Rising Mobile Package Rates Ahead of 5G Auction

The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecom, chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan, convened on Tuesday to discuss the recent increases in mobile and internet package rates by telecom companies.

During the session, Federal Minister Shaza Fatima addressed reports circulating on social media about mobile and internet services, highlighting that Pakistan still offers some of the cheapest mobile internet rates in the world. She emphasized that, overall, internet packages in the country remain comparatively low-cost on a global scale.

The committee also discussed the upcoming 5G spectrum auction, which the minister said is expected to take around two months to complete. She indicated that the government is preparing to finalize the auction to enhance digital connectivity and expand high-speed mobile services across Pakistan.

Chairman PTA added that the most affordable current internet package is priced at Rs. 147 and shared that he personally uses the Jazz Gold Value package. Both officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring that telecom pricing remains fair while facilitating the introduction of next-generation services.

The discussion reflects growing public attention to mobile and internet affordability, as users increasingly compare local rates with global standards and anticipate the impact of 5G on data prices and service quality.
