Senate Raises Concerns Over Unsupervised Social Media Use by Young Children

The Senate recently addressed growing concerns regarding the excessive and unsupervised use of social media applications by young children. The issue was brought to the floor through a “Notice for Attention” presented by Senator Falak Naz.

Responding to the notice, Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that it is a matter of national importance that requires broader public discussion.

Presiding Officer Sherry Rehman highlighted the complexity of the issue, noting that it cannot be referred solely to the IT Committee, as multiple ministries are involved. She suggested that, under the direction of the Senate Chairman, a special committee should be formed to examine the matter thoroughly.

“Given the sensitive nature of this issue, the Ministry of Law must also provide its input,” Rehman added, stressing the need for careful consideration and coordinated action. She reiterated her support for the creation of a dedicated special committee to study the challenges and recommend measures to protect children from the risks associated with unmonitored social media usage.

The discussion underscores a growing concern among lawmakers about the impact of digital platforms on children, highlighting the need for national-level policies, parental awareness, and inter-ministerial cooperation to ensure safe and responsible use of technology by minors.
