SIFC Unveils First-Ever Cloud Policy to Safeguard National Data Security

Pakistan has entered a new digital era with the approval of its first-ever Cloud First Policy. It is a significant step toward modernizing the countryโ€™s IT landscape. The world has already moved towards cloud-based systems, so it is a positive sign for the country as it is trying to keep pace with global tech advancements. The policy is adopted across all provinces, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan. It is designed to transform public sector operations by prioritizing cloud-based solutions in ICT procurements. This shift aims to improve service delivery, increase efficiency, and enhance transparency while minimizing reliance on physical infrastructure.

The policy mandates an accreditation framework for Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) to ensure compliance with global standards like ISO/IEC 27001. A key requirement of the framework is that all data must be stored within Pakistan, safeguarding national data sovereignty and security. Moreover, the public sector organizations will now transition to more secure, scalable, and cost-effective digital systems.

The Cloud First Policy is expected to drive economic growth and elevate Pakistanโ€™s position in the global digital economy, by reducing ICT costs. It also lays the groundwork for improved public service delivery and opens new opportunities for technology-driven advancements.

The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) has played a crucial role in shaping and driving the approval of this groundbreaking initiative. This policy reflects Pakistanโ€™s ambition to align with global digital trends while addressing the unique needs of its public sector. With its adoption, the country takes a major step toward securing a sustainable and competitive future in the digital age.

Our opinion:

The Cloud First Policy is a progressive move, however, its success hinges on effective implementation. Challenges such as the need for robust infrastructure, skilled personnel, and clear regulatory guidelines must be addressed. Additionally, concerns about data privacy and security require comprehensive measures to build trust among stakeholders. In conclusion, Pakistanโ€™s Cloud First Policy has the potential to drive digital transformation. However, addressing the associated challenges will be necessary to realize its full benefits.
