Sindh Launches “Middle Tech Initiative” to Boost Practical Skills

Government aims to enhance vocational training in schools with the introduction of technical education alongside traditional subjects.

The Sindh government has taken a significant step towards equipping students with practical skills by launching the “Middle Tech Initiative,” which integrates technical education into the traditional school curriculum. The initiative was formally inaugurated by Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah at the CMS Government Boys Secondary Campus School in Karachi.

The “Middle Tech Initiative” is a collaborative effort between the Sindh School Education and Literacy Department (SE&LD) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). JICA has provided crucial technical assistance in curriculum development, teacher training, and the establishment of well-equipped laboratories in schools across the province.

In the first phase of implementation, 300 schools across Sindh have been equipped to offer technical education to approximately 65,000 students. The program introduces a diverse range of courses, including agriculture, applied electrician, beautician, dressmaking, fundamental of cooking, graphic designing, hotel management, introduction to tourism, internet of things, livestock, and media production.

Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to providing students with the skills necessary to succeed in the 21st-century job market. He highlighted that the “Middle Tech Initiative” will be expanded to include “Metric Tech” at the matriculation level and eventually “Inter Tech” at the intermediate level in colleges.

Secretary of Education Zahid Ali Abbasi further elaborated on the government’s plans, stating that 1,600 computer labs will be established in schools across Sindh this year to support the objectives of the “Middle Tech Initiative.” He also emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with JICA in further enhancing the program.

The “Middle Tech Initiative” is a crucial step towards equipping young people with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving job market. By integrating technical education into the school curriculum, the Sindh government aims to create a more skilled and employable workforce, contributing to the overall economic growth of the province.

This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of vocational training and its role in empowering youth and fostering economic development in Pakistan.
