A recent study has uncovered alarming findings about the safety of smartwatch and fitness band straps. The research, published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters, reveals that popular brands, including Apple, Samsung, Google, Fitbit, and CASETiFY, are selling wristbands contaminated with perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), a toxic chemical associated with long-lasting environmental and health hazards.
PFHxA is a member of the perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) family, often referred to as โforever chemicalsโ due to their resistance to degradation. These substances have been linked to serious health issues such as hormonal disruption, liver damage, and an increased risk of certain cancers. The study highlights that fluoroelastomer watch bandsโwidely marketed by top brandsโcontain shockingly high concentrations of PFHxA, which can be easily released from the surfaces of the bands.
Smartwatch users wear their devices for extended periods, often throughout the day and night, raising concerns about prolonged exposure to these harmful chemicals. While Apple and Samsung promote the benefits of fluoroelastomer bands, including their durability and comfort, this latest research casts doubt on the safety of such materials.
Given the widespread use of these devices, the presence of PFHxA in wearable bands is a growing public health issue that requires further attention. Consumers are urged to reconsider the long-term effects of wearing these products and demand greater transparency from manufacturers regarding the chemicals used in their construction.
