Few month back, the picture sharing App, Snapchat announced that it has decided to show stories in an Algorithmic sorted feed instead of the old chronological order. This redesign was very controversial as people were very much against it. However now it seems that Snapchat, realizing that its users are very unhappy with new redesign is rolling back the old Snapchat and will bring reverse chronological order for stories.
Are people Waiting for Old Reverse Chronological Order for Stories?
But reverse chronological order heavily prioritizes people who post frequently, which can bury your best friends. The idea behind the Snapchat redesign was to offer its user base more personalized content. Snapchat’s move towards algorithmic ranking in its big redesign ensured that people you watched Stories from or chatted with most showed up at the top so you’d be less likely to miss their content.
That’s similar to how Facebook’s feed worked for a long time, and how Instagram started ranking its feed two years ago.
When Snapchat changed its overall look, its CEO Evan Spiegel said:
“We are separating the social from the media, and taking an important step forward towards strengthening our relationships with our friends and our relationships with the media.”
Now Snapchat is taking its decision back. Some people are now seeing the reverse chronological ordering of Stories both in the version of the app where there are separate Stories and Chat tabs, as well as the design where there is only Stories and All tabs.
The issue with reverse chronological ordering is that it automatically gives the advantage to users who are frequent Snapchat users. And the benefit to algorithmic sorting is that it has historically helped with social media platforms’ growth. Indeed, after Snapchat implemented algorithmic sorting, the social media platform saw growth numbers increase.
However, the most important thing is that the users of the platform should be satisfied. So lets see when Snapchat will shift back to old Snapchat.
