Turkey Arrests 1,656 Social Media Users who were Supporting Terrorism

The Government of Turkey successfully arrested around 1,656 users who were allegedly supporting terrorism and were in contact with terrorist organizations. Turkey Arrests 1,656 Social Media Users who were Supporting Terrorism. These individuals were also found involved in insulting Turkish officials on social media platforms.

The Interior Ministry of Turkey said that:

“Legal action had been taken against 3,710 people identified by police up-till now. Beside those arrested, 1,203 people were released on probation, 767 were released and 84 others are still in detention.”

As we know that social media is used for multi-purposes these and almost every issue of human life is being discussed on social media platforms be it political or social. Hence, these culprits are charged on same matters by the Turkish government.

Other charges on these culprits include:

  • Prevailing provoking hatred among community
  • Praising terrorist organisations
  • Disseminating terrorist propaganda
  • Targeting the indivisibility of the state or safety of citizens

A part from these individuals, further investigations are underway against other 10, 000 individuals who are involved in same activities on social media.

Turkey is now so concerned after facing a a failed coup in July, 2016 so that no such incident happens in the history of Turkey. Hence, such restrictions, according to Turkish Government, may lead to social unrest again in the country.
