Sony AI Launches FHIBE: A Global Data Set to Test Fairness in AI Images

Sony AI has introduced a new image data set called the Fair Human-Centric Image Benchmark (FHIBE). This freely available collection is designed to test how fair and unbiased AI image models really are. The data set includes images from 2,000 volunteers across 80 countries. Every photo in the set was collected with consent, and participants can ask for their data to be removed at any time.

Unlike most data sets used in AI research, FHIBE does not rely on scraped images from the internet. Instead, Sony AI focused on ethical data collection—built on consent, privacy, and diversity. According to Engadget, this approach makes FHIBE a first of its kind in promoting fairness and transparency in AI training.

Sony AI says FHIBE is the first truly global, consent-based data set aimed at identifying bias in how AI “sees” people. The company tested several large language models (LLMs) and vision systems using FHIBE, and none passed all fairness checks. This means bias in AI image recognition remains a significant challenge.

AI models often misinterpret people based on subtle visual cues like skin tone, hairstyles, or lighting conditions. FHIBE helps reveal where these issues occur. For example, it can show whether an AI system struggles to identify individuals from certain ethnic or cultural groups. By highlighting these blind spots, developers can improve fairness before products reach the public.
