This Device will Diagnose Your Genetic Disease in Just 15 Mins
Scientists have built a handheld device that is using a CRISPR gene-editing technology to scan for mutations much more easily than existing labs in order to help make genetic screening easier and more accessible.
The device looks a bit like a blood glucose monitor. It can analyze a purified DNA sample for signs of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy only in 15 minutes. No doubt, it is a major improvement. Now you don’t need to wait times for several weeks.

Nature Biomedical Engineering is using a transistor that is made of a graphene which shows enough sensitivity to detect the trace amount of DNA taken from a blood sample. The DNA still needs to be extracted and purified prior to analysis, so scanning for mutations is still more involved than a glucose test.
Aran the scientist has mentioned in a statement:
“A clinical tool requires clinical trials, a mature regulatory strategy, and an understanding of the billing practices in diagnostics, We’re talking with companies who would be great at pushing our lab tool into diagnostics, with a goal of setting up partnerships to make that happen. So, commercialization of the quality control and validation tool this year, and a clinical tool to come later.”
