Three Arrested Over Edited Images of Maryam Nawaz and UAE President

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has apprehended three individuals accused of editing and disseminating manipulated images of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This action comes after the widespread circulation of fake images on social media.
The FIA revealed that 20 social media accounts involved in sharing the doctored images have been identified. While three suspects are already in custody, efforts are ongoing to locate and arrest the remaining individuals. The agency has intensified its operations, conducting raids across various locations to bring all culprits to justice.

To ensure a thorough investigation, the FIA has formed a joint investigation team (JIT) headed by Additional Director Sarfaraz Chaudhry. The team includes Deputy Directors from Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad. It also reflects a coordinated effort to tackle the misuse of technology for spreading false information.
The inquiry into the doctored images was launched following a formal request from the Punjab government. These images, which falsely depicted Maryam Nawaz alongside the UAE President, sparked significant controversy on social media platforms.
The FIA’s Cybercrime Wing is leading the investigation, focusing on identifying and prosecuting individuals responsible for creating and sharing manipulated content. The agency has also issued a stern warning, stating that those found guilty of spreading false information will face strict legal consequences.
Deepfake Technology: A Growing Threat
This incident highlights the growing menace of deepfake technology. Deepfakes use advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to create convincing but false audio, images, or videos. As AI tools become more accessible, the potential for misuse has increased, posing serious challenges for individuals and authorities alike.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has spoken out about the impact of deepfakes, drawing from her own experience as a victim of an objectionable video created to discredit her. In an interview, Bokhari also expressed the emotional toll such incidents take on victims.
“I was shattered when it came to my knowledge,” Bokhari shared. “It was very difficult, and I was depressed.” She credited her daughter’s encouragement for helping her persevere.
Bokhari emphasized the need for raising awareness about deepfake technology in Pakistan. She also called for reforms in the judiciary and law enforcement systems to address this growing problem effectively. “Deepfake videos are frequently used to discredit women in Pakistan,” she claimed. She also urged the authorities to modernize their approach to combat such malicious acts.
Call for Accountability
As the FIA continues its investigation, the incident underscores the importance of addressing the misuse of technology in spreading false information. Deepfake technology also poses a significant threat to public figures and ordinary citizens alike, and its growing prevalence calls for stricter regulations, public awareness campaigns, and enhanced technical capabilities for law enforcement.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by digital manipulation and the urgent need for robust measures to protect individuals from such malicious acts.
