TSMC Could Start 1.4nm Chip Production in April 2027

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) could start trial production of its next-generation 1.4nm chip as early as April 2027, according to a new report from Taiwanese media.

TSMC’s 1.4nm technology, also known as the 14A process, will succeed its 2nm process. The reported timeline would allow the company to start production much earlier than previously expected and could strengthen its position in the advanced semiconductor market.

TSMC Could Start 1.4nm Chip Production in April 2027

TSMC is building its 1.4nm manufacturing facilities in Taichung. Construction of the technology park reportedly began in October 2025.

The site will eventually include four factories. Work on the first factory has progressed to the construction of its floors and walls after workers completed the initial steel structure. Authorities expect construction of the first facility to finish by early 2027.

Based on the latest timeline, the first factory could begin trial production in April 2027. TSMC could then move to mass production during the second half of the year.

Mass Production May Begin in October 2027

The second facility, known as P2, is also under construction. Workers have completed its concrete foundation and are now working on the steel structure.

If construction stays on schedule, P2 could be completed by October 2027. The latest plans suggest that the first two factories could reach mass production around October 2027.

This would represent a significant acceleration compared with earlier expectations. Previous plans had indicated that TSMC’s 1.4nm mass production would begin in 2028.

Two More Facilities Planned

TSMC also has plans for two additional factories at the Taichung site. The third facility remains in its early construction phase, while the company has obtained the necessary construction license for it.

The fourth facility is also part of the long-term expansion plan. Authorities expect the two later factories to be completed in 2028, with their construction schedules separated by around six months.

TSMC is reportedly investing about $49 billion in the overall project. The investment is expected to increase the company’s capacity for producing advanced chips.

TSMC Could Strengthen Its Chipmaking Lead

The reported acceleration comes after an earlier report in July suggested that TSMC could begin pilot production of its 1.4nm process in the third quarter of 2027.

If the latest timeline proves accurate, TSMC could move into trial production several months earlier than that estimate. The company is developing the 14A process as its next major step after 2nm technology.

Earlier production of 1.4nm chips could help TSMC maintain its position among the world’s leading contract chip manufacturers as demand for increasingly powerful processors continues to grow.
