Ufone-Telenor Merger Enters Final Stage, PTA Confirms New Telecom Company
Senate committee told Ufone service issues are expected to improve once the merger is finalized, while PTCL and Ufone undergo corporate restructuring.
Pakistan’s long-awaited Ufone-Telenor merger has entered its final stage, with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) informing a Senate committee that the integration is expected to conclude in the coming days, paving the way for the formation of a new telecom company.
The update was shared during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat, chaired by Senator Rana Mahmood-ul-Hassan, where lawmakers reviewed recent developments in the country’s telecommunications sector.
During the session, the committee raised concerns over the recent disruption in Ufone’s mobile services. Questioning the network issues, Senator Rana Mahmood-ul-Hassan asked why the operator’s services had experienced repeated interruptions.
Responding to the concerns, PTA Chairman Major General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman said Ufone is a government-owned company and expressed confidence that the service issues would be resolved once the Ufone-Telenor merger is completed.
The PTA chairman also informed lawmakers that PTCL and Ufone are currently being separated as part of an ongoing corporate restructuring process. According to the authority, the restructuring is being carried out alongside the merger to support the transition towards a new operational structure.
He further stated that the completion of the merger will lead to the establishment of a new telecommunications company, marking one of the most significant changes in Pakistan’s telecom industry in recent years.
The merger is expected to strengthen network infrastructure, improve operational efficiency, and enhance service delivery by combining the resources and spectrum assets of both operators. Industry observers believe the move could also reshape competition in Pakistan’s mobile market, which Jazz, Zong, Ufone, and Telenor currently serve.
The Senate committee emphasized the importance of ensuring uninterrupted telecom services throughout the transition and called for continued efforts to improve the quality of mobile connectivity for consumers.
Once finalized, the Ufone-Telenor merger is expected to become one of the largest consolidations in Pakistan’s telecommunications sector, potentially creating a stronger operator with expanded network capabilities and a broader customer base.
