University of Washington Invites Umar Saif for a Lecture on Designing Technology. In the talk, he will be sharing a sequence of systems PITB has designed for 120 million citizens of Punjab. And how with the start of $50 smartphones we can project software applications to fight poverty, disease and illiteracy for the ‘other’ 5 billion in the emerging world.

Umar Saif is a Pakistani computer scientist and entrepreneur. He is famous for his work on using ICT solutions for emerging-world obstacles. He is also the patron of Plan9, Pakistan’s leading startup incubator. It is often believed as one of the major forces behind the IT ecosystem in Pakistan.

In Nov 2011, Dr. Umar Saif was selected as the Chairman of the PITB and Secretary IT of the Government of Punjab, Pakistan. In this aspect, Dr. Saif is answerable for all public-sector IT projects in Punjab. Such as e-governance, capacity-building of the IT industry, and IT-enabled citizen services. Saif’s work on indispensable technologies received the MIT Technovator Award in 2008. And was also named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2010. He is also the Editor-in-Chief MIT Technology Review Pakistan.

In recognition to his relevance to the country the Government of Pakistan awarded Umar Saif Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence), one of the top civilian Awards in Pakistan, in 2011. He has also being named among the “The 500 Most Prominent Muslims in the World in 2015 and 2016”.
