UPS launches Drone Delivery Service
An American Delivery company, UPS, has launched the first authorized drone delivery service that will transport packages to residents. The first ever shipment made by this new drone is the delivery of medical samples at the WakeMed hospital campus in Raleigh, North Carolina. Drone Delivery Service is not new as Dominos had already launched Pizza Delivery services from Drone. However, this drone is specially designed to deliver medical units.
Drone Delivery Service: This drone will deliver Packages to Residents
For the manufacturing of this special drone, UPS had collaborated with Matternet, the company which makes autonomous drones, operational in Switzerland. The first inaugural flight was the happiest moment for the company who termed it as “a major milestone for unmanned aviation in the United States.”
Such drone was much needed as with the ever-growing vehicles on roads, some quick deliveries had to face major delays. The company said:
“the ability to avoid roadway delays, increase medical delivery efficiency, lower costs and improve the patient experience with potentially life-saving benefits,”
This quadcopter drone will be able to carry medical payloads that will weigh up to five pounds. The distance that this drone can cover is up to 12.5 miles. Currently, we have traditional courier services that take a lot of time. So as whole drone transportation will improve the speed of deliveries and at the same time reduce the delivery cost.
The Federal Aviation Administration and North Carolina’s Department of Transportation both approved and oversee the drone service, following test flights last year.
