US TikTok Ban Looms as Trump Pushes for Delay

As the TikTok ban inches closer, former President Donald Trump made a surprising appeal to the US Supreme Court. He requested a delay to resolve the matter through political means. The TikTok ban is set to take effect on January 19, just a day before Trump takes office. According to the ban, ByteDance, TikTokโ€™s Chinese parent company will have to sell the app to an American entity. If ByteDance fails to comply, TikTok will face prohibition in the United States.

Trump Seeks Supreme Court Delay to Resolve TikTok Ban Politically

In a legal brief filed last Friday, Trumpโ€™s lawyer underscored his opposition to an outright ban. The filing stated:

โ€œThis case highlights an unprecedented tension between free speech and national security, urging the court to push back the deadline to allow Trump to negotiate a political resolution.โ€

TikTok has approximately 170 million users in the US. The app has been at the center of controversy over alleged links to the Chinese government. However, ByteDance vehemently denies these claims. Concerns over data privacy and national security provoked bipartisan support for a law requiring divestment, which President Joe Biden signed into law earlier this year. ByteDance and TikTok have launched multiple legal challenges since then. The companies have been claiming that the law undermines free speech protections, however, their efforts have largely been unsuccessful.

The Supreme Court has finally agreed to hear arguments from TikTok, ByteDance, and the US government on January 10. This will be the companiesโ€™ final opportunity to topple the ban before it takes effect. It is worth mentioning that nearly two dozen state attorneys general have backed the legislation, prompting the court to uphold it in the interest of national security.

Trumpโ€™s position adds a new twist to the narrative. Despite supporting a TikTok ban during his presidency, he now opposes the move, citing its potential impact on free speech and its rage among young Americans. Trump stated, referencing his appeal to younger demographics during the recent election:

โ€œI have a warm spot for TikTok because I won youth by 34 pointsโ€

This unfolding legal drama raises critical questions about the balance between national security and free expression. The fate of one of the worldโ€™s most renowned apps hangs in the balance. So, letโ€™s wait and see what happens next. Will the TikTok ban become permanent, or will it be overturned? The future holds the answer.
