VLC Hits 3-Billion Downloads Milestone

VLC is one of the most popular open-source video players. Recently, it has reached the 3 billion downloads milestone. The app for Android is also getting support for AirPlay, allowing users to stream videos and songs from their Android smartphone to the Apple TV. Almost in a month, the VLC for Android app will receive an update that will allow wireless streaming of media between compatible devices. Ludovic Fauvet, a VLC developer has tweeted an image of the download counter with the 3 billion mark.

VLC Hits 3-Billion Downloads Milestone

One of the lead developers Jean-Baptiste Kempf has confirmed that the app will soon receive a major update, dubbed VLC 4, that will bring support for the aforesaid feature. Soon we will also find AirPlay in LG’s lineup of OLED TVs and Samsung TVs.

Kempf was quoted as saying:

“We would like it to be part of VLC 4, which is the next major release we are currently working on”

VLC has also released a minor update (v3.0.6) that has brought support for HDR in the AV1 video coding format. Furthermore, Kempf has also confirmed that VLC will soon receive enhanced support for VR content that will let you watch regular 2D videos by using VR headsets.
