WhatsApp Adds Birthday Reminders to Upcoming Contacts Tab for iPhone Users

WhatsApp is working on a new birthday reminders feature for iPhone users. The feature will show birthdays directly in the app’s Contacts tab, making it easier for users to remember important dates without entering them manually in WhatsApp.

The upcoming feature uses birthday information already saved in the iPhone’s Contacts app. This means WhatsApp will not require users to create a separate birthday list or database.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is developing the feature as part of a larger change to its iOS interface. The company is testing a dedicated Contacts tab that could replace the current Updates tab in the bottom navigation bar.

With this change, Status updates and Channels are expected to move to the Chats section. The new Contacts tab will focus more on information related to people saved in a user’s phone.

The birthday reminder will rely on the birthday details stored in the iPhone Contacts app. Users who have already added birthdays to their contacts will not need to enter the information again in WhatsApp.

Those who have not saved a birthday can simply add it to the relevant contact in the iPhone Contacts app.

Birthday reminders will remain visible

The feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.38.10.18, which is available through TestFlight.

When a contact has a birthday, WhatsApp can display a cake emoji along with a “Birthday today” label below the person’s name. The reminder is designed to remain visible throughout the day.

This could help users avoid missing a birthday simply because they did not open the Contacts tab at the right time.

More information coming to the Contacts tab

The new Contacts tab is expected to offer more than a simple list of saved phone numbers. WhatsApp is also working on displaying information such as contacts’ statuses, recent activity, and birthdays.

The changes are part of WhatsApp’s broader effort to make its iOS navigation more focused on contacts and personal connections.

The birthday reminder feature is still under development. It is currently being tested with beta users, so WhatsApp may make additional changes before releasing it to the public.

For now, iPhone users who want to prepare for the feature can make sure birthdays are correctly saved in their iPhone Contacts app.
