WhatsApp Expands Pinned Messages Limit to Four on Android

WhatsApp is making a small but useful change to its pinned messages feature. The messaging app is now testing support for up to four pinned messages in individual and group chats.

Until now, WhatsApp allowed users to keep a maximum of three messages pinned at the top of a conversation. The new limit gives users one additional slot, which can be especially useful in busy group chats.

WhatsApp Expands Pinned Messages Limit to Four on Android

According to WABetaInfo, the feature is currently rolling out to some beta testers through WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.26.35.8. The rollout is gradual, so it may not be available to everyone who installs the latest beta update.

How the fourth pinned message works

Pinning a fourth message does not require a new process. Users can simply press and hold the message they want to keep at the top, select the pin option and choose how long they want the message to remain pinned.

Once pinned, the new message joins the other three at the top of the conversation. Users with several pinned messages can tap the pinned message bar to move between them.

The feature works in both individual and group conversations. In group chats, however, the extra slot could be more useful because important information can quickly get buried in active discussions.

Group administrators can still control who is allowed to pin messages through the existing group permissions.

Why four pinned messages can be useful

Three pinned messages may not be enough for some busy groups. For example, a group could need to keep an event announcement, important instructions, a location, and a schedule easily accessible.

Previously, users had to remove one of the three pinned messages before adding another. The fourth slot reduces the need to make that choice.

WhatsApp has also been improving other parts of its pinned message system. The company recently introduced notifications for pinned messages, allowing users to see when someone pins a message in a chat or group. These notifications follow the same notification settings as regular messages and do not appear when a conversation is muted.

The company is also testing other ways to make pinned content more useful across the platform, including pinned updates for channels.

Gradual beta rollout

The four-message limit is currently available only to some Android beta testers. WhatsApp is enabling the feature through a gradual rollout, meaning even users on the compatible beta version may not see it immediately.

WhatsApp has not confirmed when the feature will reach the stable Android version or other platforms. If testing goes smoothly, the expanded limit could become available to more users in a future update.
