Whatsapp filed a case against Israeli surveillance group over espionage


NSO is an intra-state surveillance firm. Currently, it is operating in Israel. The basic aim of this organization is to provide information and technology to liscensed government intelligence agency. And also to the law enforcement agencies to assist them fight against terrorism and serious crimes.

WhatsApp condemns Israeli surveillance group over espionage

Recently, they have been accused by WhatsApp over espionage. WhatsApp alleged NSO that they have been involved in spying of over 1400 users. The location of the users is said to be collected from four different continents. It means, we can regard it as a world wide hacking spree. The victims comprise from different backgrounds. They include politicians, diplomats, dissidents, journalists and senior government officials.

WhatsApp has filed a reference in a federal court of San Francisco. They have accused the NSO group for providing hacking route to over 20 countries. But so far only 3 countries have been identified which include UAE, Mexico and Bahrain. WhatsApp told the viewers that more than 100 civil society members were made victims of this hacking spree.

Let me first explain that how NSO has done such abuse. According to WhatsApp, they have been using the video call as their tool. By using it, they have send malware to devices of a large number of users. The malware facilitated a number of their clients which includes government and intelligence firms. They covertly spy on phone’s owner, entering into their digital lives and have a check on them.

Citizen Lab, a cybersecurity research laboratory present at the University of Toronto which aligned with WhatsApp to prosecute the phone hacking. They gave information to Reuters that the victims included famous television personalities, prominent women who had been subjected to online hate campaigns and people who had been threatened.

On the contrary, NSO has completely disregarded the accusation. They told that they will fight against these allegations in an affective manner. We can just wait for the outcome of this case and
