WhatsApp is Testing A Unified Updates Tab for Status and Channels on Web

WhatsApp is steadily improving how users view and share content. One of the most noticeable changes is the redesigned Updates tab. This update was first introduced in a beta version for iOS. At that stage, it was only the beginning of a larger redesign. Channels were still under development and were not available yet. The purpose of this early update was to help users slowly adjust to a new layout before bigger features were added. However, now, WhatsApp is testing a unified Updates tab for status and Channels for web users.
Previously, WhatsApp used a Status tab. With the update, this tab was renamed to Updates. Muted status posts were moved into a separate section called Muted Status. This change helped reduce clutter on the screen. It also made it easier for users to focus on important updates. The interface became cleaner and more organized as a result.

WhatsApp also made small but useful changes to shortcuts. The privacy settings entry was moved to a new location. A new shortcut to create a status update was added inside the plus menu at the top. These updates may seem minor, but they have improved usability. They also prepared users for future changes that would arrive with channels.
Once channels were officially released, the Updates tab became the main hub for broadcast content. Both status updates and channels were placed together in one space. This made it easier for users to access shared information. Instead of switching between different tabs, everything could now be found in one location.
While mobile apps adopted this layout earlier, WhatsApp Web remained behind. On the web client, status updates and channels were still separated into two tabs. This created an inconsistent experience for users who frequently switch between mobile and web. To solve this issue, WhatsApp has started working on bringing the unified Updates tab to the web version.
In the upcoming web layout, the Updates tab will follow the same structure as mobile apps. The top section will display status updates. Each update will include a thumbnail preview. This allows users to quickly scan recent posts. It saves time and improves visibility.
Below the status section, users will find their channels. Channels they own and channels they follow will appear together. This unified list makes navigation simpler. Users no longer need to search across different sections to find channel updates.

Further down the page, WhatsApp plans to add a suggestions area. This section will recommend new channels based on relevance. Users can discover new content without actively searching for it. The channel directory will also be accessible from this area, making exploration easier.
When a channel is selected, its updates will appear in a side panel. This design closely matches the WhatsApp app for Mac. Users who already use WhatsApp on Mac will recognize the layout immediately. This consistency helps make the web interface more intuitive.
The redesigned Updates tab for WhatsApp Web is still under development. It is not available to users yet. Once released, it will combine status updates and channels in one place. This change will improve accessibility and create a consistent experience across all platforms.
