WhatsApp Is Testing Birthday Notifications for Contacts on Android

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that could make it easier for users to remember their friends’ and family members’ birthdays. According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is developing birthday notifications for Android users. The feature is still under development and is not yet available for beta testers, but it shows that WhatsApp is looking to make conversations more personal.

The new feature will introduce a dedicated section where users can see upcoming birthdays of their WhatsApp contacts. Instead of relying on a separate calendar or reminder app, users will receive an in-app notification when one of their contacts celebrates a birthday. This will make it easier to send birthday wishes directly through WhatsApp.

The idea builds on an earlier change introduced by WhatsApp. In a previous update, the company started asking some users to provide their birth year. This information was collected mainly to meet legal and regulatory requirements, especially in regions where age verification laws apply. Until now, the birth year was only used for compliance purposes and had no additional function.

With the upcoming birthday reminder feature, WhatsApp plans to use this information in a more useful way. If a contact has shared their birthday with WhatsApp, the app will be able to notify friends when the special day arrives. This means users will have a simple way to remember important dates without needing to save them elsewhere.

However, the feature will only work if a contact has already shared their date of birth with WhatsApp. At present, the app does not ask for birth details in every country or region. As a result, users may only see birthday reminders for contacts whose birthday information is already available. The usefulness of the feature is expected to grow as more people share their birth details over time.

Privacy remains an important topic for this new feature. According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp has not yet introduced privacy controls that allow users to decide whether their birthday should be visible to contacts. Since the feature is still in its early stages, the company may add privacy settings before the official release. This would allow users to have more control over who can view or receive birthday-related information.

Birthday reminders are already available on several social media and messaging platforms, so adding a similar feature to WhatsApp seems like a natural step. Since millions of people already use WhatsApp to send birthday wishes, receiving reminders inside the app could make the experience more convenient and encourage users to stay connected.

At the moment, WhatsApp has not announced when the feature will be released. It is still being developed for Android, and beta testers do not have access to it yet. More improvements are expected before it becomes available to the public.
