WhatsApp Lets Users Access Instagram and Facebook Media Directly

WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that lets users access media from their Instagram and Facebook accounts directly in the messaging app. The feature lets users select stories, posts, and reels without opening the Instagram or Facebook apps.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature is currently rolling out to some users running the latest WhatsApp beta versions on Android and iOS. WhatsApp plans to expand access to more beta testers in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp Lets Users Access Instagram and Facebook Media Directly

The new feature adds Instagram and Facebook as media sources inside WhatsApp’s media picker. When users open the picker, they can switch to a list view to see the available sources.

A dropdown menu at the top allows users to select either Instagram or Facebook. After choosing a platform, users can browse the available media and select content they have previously shared.

The media appears in a familiar grid layout, similar to the existing WhatsApp media picker. This allows users to find recent stories, older posts, and reels more easily.

Users Can Share Media in Chats and Status

WhatsApp is making the feature available in different parts of the app. Users can access Instagram and Facebook media when creating a WhatsApp Status update or when sharing content in individual and group conversations.

This could make it easier to reuse content across Meta’s platforms without having to download the media or switch between different apps.

Users can select photos and videos from their Instagram and Facebook accounts and share them directly through WhatsApp.

Accounts Center Connection Required

Users must connect their WhatsApp account to Meta’s Accounts Center to use the new feature. Accounts Center lets users manage connections between WhatsApp and other Meta platforms.

The connection remains optional. Users who prefer to keep their WhatsApp account separate from Instagram and Facebook can continue using WhatsApp without linking their accounts.

However, users who want to access Instagram and Facebook media through WhatsApp will need to enable the connection. Without it, Instagram and Facebook will not appear as media sources in the WhatsApp picker.

WhatsApp says the connection works in one direction for this feature. Instagram and Facebook do not gain access to WhatsApp media through the integration.

Feature Still in Gradual Rollout

The Instagram and Facebook media feature is currently available to some beta testers on both Android and iOS. WhatsApp is gradually expanding the rollout, so even users with the latest beta version may not see it immediately.

The company has not yet confirmed when the feature will become available to all users. More users are expected to receive access through future updates as the rollout continues.

The new feature builds on WhatsApp’s existing Accounts Center integration and gives users another way to share content across Meta’s platforms without leaving WhatsApp.
